WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy Spirit is the third person of the Triune God. We accept the Father and the Son as God but there is an apprehension about the Holy Spirit as God. However, the scripture tells us that like the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit is also hundred percent God. His role is mentioned in Genesis 1:1–2 and Job 33:4 clearly acknowledging and proving hundred percent involvement of the Holy Spirit during the creation of the world.

In 1 Corinthians 3:16 we read that we are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in us. So, God’s Spirit is a person, an entity who abides in a person. Here we must clearly understand that the Holy Spirit is not a power but is a person having power.

The truth is that the Holy Spirit is a person having power.

God created mankind to have fellowship with them and to abide in them

God always wanted to talk to mankind who was created in His image and likeness. Therefore God used to walk in the Garden of Eden in the cool of the day wanting to converse with Adam. Hebrews 1:1 “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,”

The word ‘Spoke’ in Greek is ‘Laileo’ which means to talk, speak, utter contrasted to the word ‘Lego’, which involves the intellectual part of man, ‘his reasoning’. ‘Lego’ means ‘to argue.’

Laileo is used especially for children, meaning ‘to talk too much’.

The word Laileo is ascribed to God indicating not that the content of His speech was meaningless but that He spoke and keeps speaking instead of keeping quiet.

But when Adam sinned, that fellowship was broken because the entire mankind sinned and fell short of the Glory of God. Hence God could not fellowship with His people because the man was deprived of His Glory. So, God had to use a mediator to communicate with His people. Therefore, God used Prophets as a medium to speak to His people. We can make a note here that He is always a Speaking God and His heart yearned to have fellowship with His people and to speak with them. The ultimate purpose of God was to speak directly to His people, so He had made a provision in Christ for the same. The Bible says that the heart of this Speaking God was on that He Himself comes down on this earth and talk to His people face to face. Hence, God came down on Earth in the form of Christ 2020 years back, born of the Virgin Mary, and walked on the earth. Now, can you imagine that the God who created the earth, His creation was Himself walking on it, but His purpose was man’s heart becomes the focal point of conversation with God.

The Godhead can talk to us directly through the Holy Spirit. Hence Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:16, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and God’s Spirit lives in you?” The word ‘know’ in the above verse in the original language is ‘Oida’; meaning ‘inner knowing’ — not by the study of theology or by our daily experience with people, but an inner knowing.
