The Law or the Cross (Grace)

--

Even after the finished work of Christ some people still rely on law — ‘to take them through’, which is absolutely dangerous.

So, you may then ask why was the law given at all? According to Galatians 3:24, the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ. In other words, there is a hidden message inside the law that ‘you’ cannot keep it and the only one who can keep it is ‘Jesus Christ’ through whose obedience we are made righteous and holy, as Romans 10:4 tells us that Christ is the end of the law. He came to fulfil the law as Galatians 2:16 says because by observing the law no one will be justified and Galatians 3:10 further adds that all who rely on observing the law are under a curse for it is written: Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of the law. Galatians 3:11 mentions “Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, …” We must always remember that law is a taskmaster –the devil was ruling humanity through the law. Every time a man could not obey the law, the devil was over him like a taskmaster and was ruling over him through fear and death. So, first of all, it was mandatory to destroy the works of the law, to set the entire humanity free. So, the Bible says in Galatians 4:4–5, “But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons.”

So, Christ was born to redeem us from the law. Colossians 2:14 confirms that Christ canceled all the written laws. Secondly, He took the law away. Thirdly, He nailed it on the Cross. As soon as this was done, the Bible in Colossians 2:15 says that He totally disarmed the devil and made a public display of him.

Why? Simply because the law was the power to rule for the devil, and when the law was totally terminated and nullified, the devil was also totally destroyed. Most believers do not know this truth and they think that devil still has authority and power.

Let us read Hebrews 2:14 to clarify the above statement, “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death — that is, the devil.”

The root word for ‘destroy’ in Greek is ‘Katargeo’ which means:

a) To render inactive

b) Useless

c) Ineffective

d) Nullify

e) To do away with

So, the devil is rendered inactive, useless, ineffective, nullified, and already done with. In other words, the devil cannot touch a believer, and not only that he should tremble while seeing the believers and this is the good news of Christ or the gospel of grace.

But then the question arises then how come the devil plays such havoc in the lives of believers. Because the Bible says that “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge…” in Hosea 4:6.
