How do we know that the Spirit is a person?
Jesus Christ Himself addresses Holy Spirit as a person and not as a material. When He, the Spirit of Truth has come, He will guide you in all truth as revealed in John 16:13. Just as you have a unique personality, so does the Holy Spirit. In fact, there are characteristics ascribed to Him that only a person (i.e., being with intellect, emotion and will) can possess. Not only does He have the ability to think, communicate and express His love; He is also easily grieved by our careless words and actions. Here are some specific traits by which we would clearly know that the Holy Spirit is a person. They are as follows:
HOLY SPIRIT HAS A MIND
Can the Holy Spirit think? Can He remember? According to the Word of God, He has all the abilities like that of any human being. He has a mind, He has the ability to explore, examine and search. This is what the Spirit of the Lord can do. For example, we cannot understand the things that God has prepared for our future; for “…The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 2:10.
The Scripture itself declares that the Holy Spirit has a mind as mentioned in Romans 8:26–27 and we can say this without any doubt when we notice the following scriptures.
Firstly, the Holy Spirit prays as in 1 Corinthians 14:15, which requires a mind.
Secondly, the Holy Spirit searches the hearts, which requires a mind as in 1 Corinthians 2:10.
Thirdly, the Holy Spirit teaches, which requires a mind as mentioned in John 14:26.
Fourthly, the Holy Spirit us as stated in John 14:26, which requires a mind.
Fifthly, the Holy Spirit testifies as mentioned in John 15:26, which again requires a mind.
So, with the backing up of the scripture Romans 8:27, we conclude that the Holy Spirit has a mind.
